The gate was used a symbolic victory arch where Czech kings passed on their coronation procession to the St Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle.
DARK HISTORY – The tower once displayed the heads of the twelve Protestant leaders executed in 1621. It was also the final conflict of the Third Years War in 1648, when the towns of Prague, on the right bank of the river, repelled the Swedish army. The bombarding from the Swedish caused severe damage to the unique Gothic decoration.
Visitors can climb the narrow 138 steps to its gallery and enjoy unforgettable views of town.
