Prague Castle

Only minutes away walking from our Appia Hotel and Residences, the Prague castle is a must-see attraction when in Prague.

PROTECTED AND WORLD RECORD

Protected by UNESCO World Heritage, the site consists of a large-scale of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings, from the remains of Romanesque-style constructions from the 10th century through Gothic modifications of the 14th century.

It is considered the biggest castle complex in the world, with a staggering area of almost 70,000 m2, and the castle attracts approx. 1.8 million visitors every year.

PRESIDENTIAL RESIDENCE

Since 1918, the castle became the seat of the then president T.G. Masaryk and continued to serve as the official presidential residence to present days.

Your visit may be crowned by meeting foreign leaders having a casual stroll in the castle area.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

St Vitus Cathedral

The most prominent building in the complex is the Gothic-style St Vitus Cathedral, which the constructions started in 1344 and replaced a Romanesque basilica. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Prague and contains the burial tombs of many important saints and Bohemian kings.

The Old Royal Palace

Having its roots dating back to the 9th century, the current building was actually built by Charles IV in the 14th century as a palace for royal functions. The most interesting part of the castle is the 16th-century Vladislav Hall, a massive structure used for coronations and banquets.

The Prague Castle Picture Gallery

The castle has an immense collection of about 4,000 works, more than 100 of those displayed here at the gallery from artists and master of the Baroque period with much of the current collection dating to the 17th century.

The Royal Gardens

Ferdinand I had this fine example of a Renaissance garden added in 1534. In addition to its many flowerbeds and lawns, the Royal Garden (Královská zahrada) incorporates a variety of interesting buildings, including the Ball Game Pavilion; the Lion's Court; and the Royal Summer House, with its fascinating bronze Singing Fountain, created in 1568 and notable for the fact that its dropping water sounds like the ringing of bells.

And there is so much more to see and explore in its complex. Such as the Queen Anne’s Summer Palace, The Golden Lane, the Southern Gardens, the Paradise Gardens and the St George Basilica.

There is no fee to enter the complex, only for the historical buildings and expositions.

The castle offers guides from 150 czk per person for a minimum of 4 people.
